What is Heated Yoga?

Heated yoga or hot yoga is a relatively new style of yoga that has grown in popularity in recent years. This class utilizes positions and breathing techniques common to traditional yoga classes. The positions are largely achievable by new yogis, while still offering a challenge to more experienced yogis.

However, what sets this style of yoga apart is the temperature in the studio. In a heated yoga class at a yoga studio like Sun Rock, the heat is cranked up to around 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that you’ll be sweating even more than usual during the yoga class.

While they are very similar, there is a difference between heated yoga and hot yoga. Hot yoga is much hotter than heated yoga. The room is typically heated to between 95 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. While this means more sweat and detoxification, this can be distracting and challenging, especially for those new to hot yoga. A heated yoga class may be a better choice for beginners or those who still want to be able to fully focus on their yoga workout.

The Benefits of Heated Yoga

Why crank up the heat during a heated yoga class? There are a number of health benefits from doing so.

The warmer room temperature helps to make each yoga position more challenging. This can help you to get a better workout and burn more calories than normal while still enjoying a yoga class of the same length. In addition, the warmer temperature may help your muscles to relax more readily, which can help to deepen your stretch.

Just as warming up before a workout can help you to avoid injury, the warmer temperature in the room may help to condition your muscles during your workout, giving you a deeper stretch and less strain.

Heated yoga may help to build bone density, improve flexibility, reduce stress, boost your cardiovascular health, reduce blood glucose levels, nourish your skin, and more! The best part is that you’ll start reaping these benefits from your very first heated yoga class.

Tips for Trying Heated Yoga for the First Time

Heated yoga may not be a good choice for those who are brand new to yoga. It may be difficult to focus on trying new positions when you’re also sweating more than normal in the warm room. However, if you already have a good basis in other forms of yoga, classes in heated or hot yoga in St George can be a great way to take your practice to the next level.

There are a few things you should know ahead of your first heated yoga class. First, while the goal is to sweat during your class, you don’t want to get overheated. Wear lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing that will help you avoid getting overly hot during your workout.

Before, during, and after your class, it’s important to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. While you should eat a meal to give your body fuel ahead of your class, avoid food that may be heavy and leave you feeling bloated.

The warmer temperature in the room and the extra sweat can also irritate your skin if you tend to wear perfumes or scented lotions. Consider skipping these before your class, as well as any makeup that you typically wear for yoga. This will help you to stay more comfortable and avoid distractions like running mascara during your class.
